My husband and I started the process to become licensed foster parents in the beginning of 2018. One of the things I was most excited about was setting up our nursery. I did so much research about setting up a foster care nursery because It’s so hard to prepare a room for a child you have not met.
We decided to turn what was once my home office into a gender neutral nursery. It was already a soft blue with beautiful hard wood flooring. We added the basics, a changing area, a crib and a dresser for clothing.
We used my great grandmother’s buffet as a changing table/dresser. It’s the perfect size and has so much storage. Having a little piece of her in the nursery feels so special. We also displayed my childhood dollhouse that my parent’s handmade and a table and chair set that my mom painted white to match. The wall hangings were still in place from my office set up. I did not take them down until I found replacements.
The loose theme for this gender neutral foster care nursery is Dr. Seuss’ book, Oh The Places You’ll Go. On top of the dresser/changing table I added a globe, Oh The Places You’ll Go and a diffuser. I use Young Living Essential Oils in this diffuser every single night!
My aunt and uncle gave us a beautiful crib and mobile they had stored in their garage. It’s exactly what I was wanting for our foster care nursery. I hung a wood sign that I purchased at Hobby Lobby above the crib. I read this bible verse to bubba often. It’s a great reminder that wherever he goes, God is always with him.
Putting together this nursery was so fun and also very emotional. David and I shopped and set up everything together. While doing so we talked about our hopes and dreams for the future and the little ones we would soon meet. It was a bonding experience i’ll never forget.
Our first placement, bubba, was placed with us on August 9, 2018 when he was 4 and a half months old. He will be two in a couple of weeks. This nursery truly has grown with him and become less of a “foster care nursery” and more of bubba’s room. To see what it looks like now and hear how I organize everything, make sure to watch the room tour I shared on my YouTube channel.
